Facebook Fan Page Changes Coming

Facebook Fan Pages Garden Bloggers
If you logged into your Facebook fan page today you may have come across the message prompting you to switch to the new layout that will be rolled out on March 1st. The new Facebook fan pages look a lot like your new personal page. I'll let you look at some of the developments for yourself, but I wanted to point out two that are the most interesting to me.

When you are logged into your page you are given the option to "switch" and navigate Facebook as your fan page. Yes, you can post and make comments on OTHER pages as YOUR own page. This new option is really interesting and one that could go a long way to help you build your page's number of "likes." When you are logged in as your page there are even notifications of new "likes" and comments on your fan page, just like on your personal page.  The other thing about the new design that I like is that you are able to select the featured pages you liked under your page in the sidebar. You're allowed to select your favorites to be highlighted in your sidebar. This gives you a great place to promote the pages of friends, brands you like or work with you or pages you just find interesting.

To see the differences you can see my MrBrownThumb Facebook page here which I've switched to the new layout and the Garden Bloggers Facebook page which I will keep as the old layout until March 1st so you can see the differences between the two.

UPDATE: I've been testing the feature to comment as my fan page on other fan pages and it works! You must add them to your page's favorites in order to be able to see them in the news feed. When you are at a page you like below the avatar is a link that read's 'add to my pages favorites' click on that and add it to your pages favorites to be able to communicate with it.

Update 2: Ruh-roh. I think I just discovered a downside to this. A whole new batch of email notifications when people like or reply to your postings as you page.

  1. Wait, did you say they FINALLY added notifications to a fan page!?!?! That's awesome and way, way overdue. I'm logging in to FB right now to switch! Thanks for this info. :-)

  2. Amy, Yes. They did. It's pretty cool. You can finally see who the new people are on your page. I LOVE being able to post on other pages as my own page instead of with my personal account.

  3. Hmm, I like the way it looks but I liked the tabs at the top. Easier for people to see? Then again, I rarely go to the pages I like, I just read the updates.

  4. Go to "edit page" - "your settings". Uncheck e-mail notification box to stop emails of comments. I like that email notification if people make a comment on a topic that is no longer on the front screen.

  6. I know you can turn off email notifications to your personal page, so presumably also to the fan page? I LOVE that I can now comment as the GF because my issue is, people I don't know at all will ask to be my personal page FB friend because they only see me comment as MM, not GF and I look like a douche because my personal page is, um, personal. Thanks for letting us know 'bout this.

  7. You can turn off email notifications under Edit Page | Your Settings.

  8. The only trouble is rebuilding "friends" or links as GF. It does look like you can switch easily between personal and fan pages, which is handy cuz if I want to be me for my actual friends' pages.

  9. Regarding the link I posted earlier... I figured out the fix for pages. It's the same as they explain how to fix it on your personal page. But to see the feeds link, you have to choose to view as your page and then go to your home while you're viewing as you page (hope that makes sense). Then you should see the "Most Recent" link and be able to edit the options.

  10. @Sydney, I think most people interact that way too. Unless the page is heavy on the pictures or has a popular discussions tab.

@Fred, Thanks for pointing that out in the comments. I figured it out last night after updating.

@Amy, I noticed that earlier in the year when I had to set up a Facebook page for someone and I wasn't seeing their status updates even though I was posting them.

@Monica, One thing I've noticed that's a little confusing is that while you are logged in as your Facebook page you get recommended pages you already like with your personal account. When you "like" a page as your own page it adds it to the widget in the left-hand side.

    @Amy, Thanks for following up.

I hope you find this blog a useful garden blogging resource. Sometimes I may reply to comments with my MrBrownThumb account or I may reply with my Garden Bloggers account. Hope this isn't confusing. If you're looking for gardening information check out "Google For Gardeners"
